Someday - perhaps quite soon - young people will think of the "Star Wars" franchise the way we think "Li'l Rascals" today. Only hilariously out-of-touch olds will know what a Star Wars is, and will reference it all the time in ways that seem bizarrely anachronistic to contemporary sensibilities.

It seems to me that a bump stock very specifically enables the fire control group to be actuated multiple times with one trigger "pull" - that is the point. So "pulling the trigger" is the wrong thing to measure - the law should look at whether the FCG is actuated 1x (vs more) upon trigger pull.

I understand the distinction. I think the "analysis" is just sophistry, playing games with word-symbols to arrive at the same destination and pretending that somehow imparts some logical distinction. I disagree; if you end up in the same place, the semantics that brought you there are immaterial.

I'm with Sotomayor on this one. "Bump stock" just describes a sub-type of machine gun that works in a particular way. The statute covers devices that convert semi-automatic-firing guns to automatic-firing-guns, and that's exactly what a bump stock does.

"...enabling the shooter to repeatedly pull the trigger..." I thought the mechanism allowed the shooter to just hold their finger still while the gun's recoil momentum carries it back and forth, thus "bumping" the trigger against the finger...which seems like 1 trigger pull to me?

I think the transfer point was "why should we have to pay taxes for things we don't support?" That is, using a moral fig leaf to conceal the cowardly, selfish economic interest that actually underlies their appeal. There's a little something for everyone to get on board with.

Yes, if you have an old laptop that "can't run" a modern OS, throwing Linux on there is a great way to resurrect it. It doesn't take long to learn about what distros are available and how to get them onto an old machine. You can do it with a USB stick.
