The question I have is why don't these numbers show up in special elections? Why aren't Dems getting killed in these if the majority of the public think that things were better under Trump?

Turnout effects. The Dems picking up white college voters who are much more likely to turn out in specials and trading away white voters without a degree who aren't but will pull the lever for their guy every 4 years.

I mean, if you believe polling, there's a real sense that voters thing *Trump* is uniquely competent and good with the economy (and is also socially moderate), while they also hate the GOP as a whole.
