Velazquez' "Surrender of Breda" (c.1634) has several incredible "guys looking into 4th wall" details in addition to being a sick painting generally, good one for fans of this kind of thing

Also, cribbing from a podcast ep called "The Problem with Potency," with older cultivation methods if you had ultra-high THC there was a sort of homeostatic effect where the terpene profile was correspondingly muted, presumably the plant had no nutrition/energy for it. An issue with commercial 30%?

Like, 30% used to be hard for people to achieve as a horticultural stunt, and now it's something that's normal price at the store, that seems weird to me

I have *not* read an article that says "this stuff's all GMO now because this is such a slam dunk in terms of giving the market what it traditionally wants," but I'm not sure anyone's obliged to self-report that and it seems very odd that low-quality Canadian producers now have cheap ~30% flower

I've started to see a lot of stuff in Canada's legal market that is previously nonsense numbers, 29-30%, and I *also* read that in the last few years (2020-2?) people working on decreasing trace THC in industrial hemp stumbled on, basically, a genetic knob to turn it up and down.

(I also have life ruining ADHD and I'd say the extent of me having positive or negative solidarity with people based on whether or not they have it is "if I think they have it and don't know, I give them a quick spiel about how it works and where to find an inventory")

Maybe bad media diets? Like, I would never tell someone to touch grass, anybody can try to say that to anybody online to be mean, w/e. But "people (with or without my brain thing) generally ask questions out of malice" is a weird belief to have even if you live in a tall tower and only read books?

I knew some of the unspoken reasons for LLM mania are "it can do ruling class ventriloquism" and "it can drape a veil over gouging cartelism, rent-racking & wage suppression," but literally *just asking it what public opinion is* is so goofy I hadn't even considered it. W for the Harvard megabrains.

A v. widely shared 🇵🇸 twitter account's clip of the bombing was already broken on X late last night, intentionally or otherwise. Absolutely wouldn't suggest its some duty for everyone but Biden will keep making up fake atrocities. I felt I had to be able to say "No, not hearsay. I fucking saw it"

The kids they're attacking are being brutalized & criminalized for trying to stop mass atrocity, and NYT's years-running pearlclutch was caliperheads not getting invites to campus. And their reading of this contrast is "the children, America's only extant moral grace note, sure are hypocrites."

I do get the wider point that I'm not going to force you to read a book over the internet. Goodbye.

Don't think that's a reasonable characterization of what I said. As to the reliability of the book I suppose that's theoretically true, but readily checked. Bartov is of course controversial now, but his uncontroversial centrality in the 90s-00 field is something you can suss out on h-list or jstor.

There's a presumptuousness to "assigning homework" as it were, wouldn't normally. I was struck by the fact that you seemed indignant, and your objection related to shallow sources & tiktok, and thought: he might value Bartov on the Wehrmacht, then think "I should at least hear him out on the war."

My last post was antagonistic, because I was affronted, but the suggestion is serious. That is, I think someone who cares about fighting antisemitism - I'm hoping that's you - would value it as a book about Nazi antisemitism: then, perhaps, think about reading that author on Gaza with an open ear.

It's at the nearest 20 university libraries. Seminal work in the field. Which you'd know, if your own personal research into genocide prevention extended as far as "book reading."

that you read Hitler's Army, and maybe follow up with Mirrors of Destruction if you like it. I honestly don't believe you can read those books and then think "Omer Bartov, who supports the student demonstrators, clearly doesn't understand the stakes as well as I do."

One of the most bracing things I read was Hitler's Army by Omer Bartov, about the wholehearted embrace of national socialism by the Wehrmacht and its rank and file - and I would suggest, if you want to find authorities more useful than MSNBC, CNN, or Chinese propaganda on Tiktok . . . >

I heard about the review via a twitter discussion that sounded to me like a sherry party at Bari Weiss's university so I had high hopes for that specific outcome, but that doesn't seem borne out by bylines and google results. ("He's 'doing research,'" they'll sigh in the Yale English grad lounge)

No one's above withering criticism but neither the "forensic" google theorycrafting nor "I was a TA at Yale and woof, no wonder she's dumb" suggested to me that this is written from a mist-shrouded floating Atlantis of people who are smarter than Lauren Oyler

Several other provinces' lotto corps (basically QUANGOs) are also basically copy-and-pasting the same phone casino horseshit you already know, because, hey, they'd rather have that money, and it's just flying under the radar (or flying in a billion-casino bomber formation, blotting out the sky)

Atlantic Canada had a huge "scourge, social ill, countless families destroyed" sociopolitical drama re: gambling terminals in the 90s and 00s, front page news & politics, and now the provincial lotto corp is cashing in with its own phone slots app - and crickets from what's left of media. Quite apart from getting into the weeds about sweeping claims that Young People are supposedly less uncomplainingly dutiful about their work, it's insane to me to expect people entering the buzzsaw of Canadian public healthcare to behave though they were getting the social contract of 40 years ago

With the lowest quality ads I kind of wonder if goog is using them to drive people towards the ad-free premium service, but it still seems like the cleverer way to do that would be with random annoying ads and not thousands of ever-more-derangedly misogynistic short cartoons "advertising" Hero Wars.

My last few years of youtube has been saturation bombing of various things that should in no way have such an ad budget. Grammarly, then fake videogames (Hero Wars eg) the biggest standouts. I guess the fake games dupe people into deceptive recurring billing? Still weird it can pay for that many ads

Hard to talk about without sounding like either "people are polarized and tribal" or "oh no, epistemic closure" (which was a right-libertarian thing) but imo since the mid 2010s more and more people seem happy, indeed proud, to cleave to a political stance like blue-anonism and never, ever look back
