have you all heard of
THE RADIUM GIRLS?
if you haven’t, go look that up because any post i try to do won’t be enough and will get suppressed.
come back when you’re done
looking up THE RADIUM GIRLS
okay. you done?
cool. okay so Clarence Thomas wants to get rid of OSHA
The Criminal podcast did a great episode about this a few months ago, it was the first time I had ever heard of them. 💔 thisiscriminal.com/episode-260-...
People act like OSHA is this gang of fun-haters who make up stupid rules to make their jobs annoying. Literally every single regulation OSHA has ever written was in response to someone getting maimed; usually killed, but sometimes merely losing a limb or two. Occasionally breathing corrosive gas.
I was told that the first workplace safety rule was “you must bathe your chimney sweeps once per week”.
Keeping in mind that the chimney sweeps were young boys who’d be sent up chimneys naked and the creosote was causing scrotal cancer.
There’s so much that we don’t realize we can lose.
I can help but wonder how he tries to justify this to himself (assuming he has a justification beyond "I'm Clarence Thomas and I deserve more money, so i'll rule however you want for the right price")
I mean, my Mom used to teach forklift safety. I have seen some of the cautionary videos she used, and, well, let’s just say there are safety regulations around heavy machinery for REASONS, and those reasons include “you don’t want to end up resembling a special effect in a gore-fest horror movie”
But glowing lips are hawt.
Seriously though, let’s add Triangle Shirtwaist to the list. There are many others, but those two are really good examples of how safety regulations are written in blood and suffering.
We do not need to go back to that.
If the size of Kate Moore's The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women feels like too dense of a read, I'd also suggest this graphic novel as a good introduction.
The book mentioned above is a FANTASTIC source, but 400+ pages can feel daunting.
We don't even have to look at historical examples because children are dying while working at poultry plants RIGHT NOW www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023...
