The housing crisis steadily ramped up from 1980 to present. It was not a 2020 shock. By far the two largest drivers are steadily falling number of people per household and steadily rising longevity.

Pre-1970 California built a stupefying amount of water supply, then turned around and down-zoned everything. In my area the municipal utility district has so much capacity that we could easily double the population and there'd still be plenty of water.

I don't know how to break this to commentators covering machine learning topics, but LLMs do not "reason", ever, so they cannot suffer from a breakdown in reasoning. arxiv.org/abs/2406.02061

When they first ran that story they said that books were the third-largest greenhouse gas emitter among all industries, and the fact that it ran like that tells you a lot about the editorial process at NPR and whether they have their brains engaged at all.

The people who are mainly benefitting from this trend refuse to vote, or aren't qualified. The people who are either insulated from this trend or are actually harmed by it are very likely to vote or are in fact candidates for mayor.
