I know everyone is already mad about the great gatsby thing and I am preaching to the choir but reading a lot is one of best tickets kids in bad situations have out of there both in short term escapism and long term educational opportunities. It’s scary that it doesn’t seem emphasized anymore

When I was a kid I routinely read the “condensed” versions of adult books like Moby Dick or Treasure Island. They were great!

the one thing that makes me a little more hopeful/curious if this problem is being exaggerated by a fraction of the dumbest people alive (Steve Jobs wannabes) is how big stuff like booktok is. even if they're reading garbage, I wonder if those people still read a lot and look for better books.

Wasn’t there a whole movement to get more relatable books into the hands of kids because getting them to read ANYTHING is more important than what they’re reading? It doesn’t matter if they’re reading sports gossip or Shakespeare if the alternative is not reading.

And while there are obviously exceptions on either side, this is why I hate every iteration of "challenging literature/film/theory is classist" take --- lots of erudite people are that way bc it was their way out, and plenty of rich kids don't give a shit bc they don't have to
