If it’s about these specific candidates, why not picture them? It’s not edgy or clever. It’s weak and it’s wrong.

The presidential seal represents them, that's why. Honestly, I think this ,"why not use another picture; I think a picture of them, or 80 raging birthday candles on a cake would be better" is irrelevant and bordering on whataboutism. They used symbols to communicate an idea about the election. YMMV.
