As the old saying goes, opinions are like assholes: everybody’s got one. So I have to accept that fully half of the reviews on Goodreads are gonna be from people who clearly do not excel at reading comprehension.

I read a review of Dumplin’ that was like “I stopped reading in ch 1 when the main character said she was fat, but another character was REALLY fat. This book body shames!” The WHOLE POINT of the book is the MC learning to change how she views herself & others. And the reviewer was a skinny bitch.

In that case, I don’t see the problem. Gatekeepers gonna gatekeep. My 7yo’s favorite picture book in the world— SOUL FOOD SUNDAY— got shit from a some gatekeepers bc the child is being allowed to use a knife and prepare food, with his grandma’s oversight, which they thought was “dangerous.” 🙄

I think what you said about learning from it is key. Some adults foster an environment where kids aren’t free to be honest or themselves. The predictable result of that is kids lie more. The question is, does the story make it clear that lying isn’t the solution to life’s problems?

Hahaha. That’s why the librarian had to order a whole bunch of food books! I think we’ve gone through most of them at this point, lol. He’s autistic so this is a sticky interest for him.

Vermont is definitely not as culinarily diverse as other places I’ve lived. 😞 One thing we *do* have is great Nepalese & Himalayan restaurants (😋). But it would be nice if we had more cuisines. Generally, if we want something that isn’t pizza or bagels, we have to cook it ourselves. 😂

He LOVED Julia and the Mango Tree!! I will add Granny’s Kitchen to our request list though! He’s been going through the food books like crazy! And it all started with SOUL FOOD SUNDAY (which remains, to this day, his favorite book— we still read it like 3-4x a month).

I mean… I’d read it. 😂 Kinda reminds me of how Sandra Salabury did a cover and pitch for THE BABY WHO STAYED AWAY FOREVER as a joke, but it was so fantastic she ended up turning it into an actual book that’s coming out next spring from Doubleday.

It’s soooo cute!! I mean, the art is so cozy & warm. And I love that line about nenek’s cinnamon-and-coconut hugs. I think my kiddo related to it bc he loves curries & foods with spices, but can’t really handle heat. Although, by the end he was like “I wanna make a sambal too!” 😄

Thanks to all the #KidLit #kidlitart folks who suggested food- and cooking- picture books for my kiddo. We asked our library to acquire the ones they didn’t already have.

He enjoyed them all. But his absolute favorite was Lenny Wen’s SPICY, SPICY HOT.

We might need to buy our own copy. 😂🌶️

I think Cuddlefish has really reasonable courses, and I like how specific each one is. Character designs, graphic novels, early readers, etc. Like $50. Bite-sized chunks that aren’t such a huge time and money commitment.

Agreed. ::sigh:: It’s one thing to be a trans woman. And it’s another thing to be a cis man (whether straight or queer) exploring the subversion of masculine expectations through kink. Although, I honestly think people like her are against both.

That’s fair. I tend to be incredibly forgiving re: translating comics to film. I know there’s gonna be huge departure from the source material. With 20yrs of hindsight, the Toby McGuire films stand out for how ham-fisted they were. Esp when compared to the Marvel films & shows created in recent yrs.

I love Alfred Molina. And I think he did an amazing job with that role. Which is pretty incredible considering he was having to say lines of dialogue like, “What? Voices? In my head?” 🤦🏻‍♀️

So I do love all the Toby McGuire Spider-Man movies from a place of pure nostalgia. Bc I loved comics as a kid, & it was exciting to see the characters I loved on the silver screen for the first time— and in a big budget film. That said… 😬 the writing in them in terrible. The dialogue is God-awful.
