Update: Looks like I was wrong about this. Current status seems that Mizuhara really stole the $ from Ohtani, without his knowledge.

This 100%. But I bet it was Ohtani's agent who realized it, and probably instructed Ohtani/Mizuhara to fabricate the "theft". But can Ohtani really just not press charges, and the whole thing goes away? I assume Mizuhara will face real consequences, and eventually the lie will fall apart...

Yup. Shohei has to stay squeaky clean, even if Shohei paying his buddy’s debt was an innocent favor. So now they’re gonna say the interpreter stole the money, and the interpreter will take all the blame. Brutal.
