My maternal grandmother (b.1919) told me that in the 30s & 40s she & her friends would talk about how it felt like the end of the world. But it wasn't. I cling to this whenever it feels like the end of the world.

Traumatized for life though. My Grandmother saved every scrap and refused to throw things out due to her childhood during the Depression.

/3 I think about Grandma taking a taxi to the hospital to have my mom, forbidding my grandpa’s parents from calling him to let him know — he was on base studying for the supply officer test the next day, and doing well would determine where he was assigned, and maybe whether he’d live or die.
