Ko Māwhera te kainga. Ko Kevin tōku ingoa. Retired, Pākehā, gay, vegetarian, conservationist, public health advocate. Still on boards and things, so just to be clear, this is my personal account.

Fantastic that someone thought to hold onto one for Te Papa! They might also have a copy of the submission we wrote for the human rights legislation. I have long ago lost mine, but there’s a lot of me in that document (and really good it is too!)

Brings back memories from when we developed this poster. Very proud of this and, especially, the campaign we made it for

Let’s be clear: the Ministry’s agenda comprises exclusively of those environmental issues that have somehow managed to get some political currency. Almost exclusively climate change, freshwater, waste and maybe toxic sites (probably one person in a cupboard). And that list will probably get shorter

I’m sad to hear the news that Barbara Stewart has died. We worked together on the Health Committee. She was a lovely person and someone who was in Parliament exemplifying the value of kindness before it became popular

This might seem hopelessly out of touch, but my partner and I have both tested Covid positive on RATs today, both for the first time. We don't share a house with anyone else. Is it reasonable to assume we have the same strain etc, or do we need to separate bedrooms, bathrooms etc?

Yes. Also gives Māori an equal opportunity to take advantage of a payment everyone is supposed to have a right to AND shines a light on a national shame

I’m watching Parliament (I know, sad) debate superannuation. TPM making excellent point about Māori dying on average 7 years earlier than non-Māori. How about we reduce the age of eligibility for Māori by this number of years ie Pākehā at 65, Māori 58? Some issues of course.

Had to give me speech to the Public Health Association by Zoom (without being able to see the audience) because weather conditions have prevented me from getting to Rotorua. Very unnerving! Did they like it? Did they get the jokes? Who can tell

I’ve mostly been off the socials for the past couple of months (supporting a very sick friend) but wanted to jump back on today to add my shock and sadness to hear about Rod Oram, and to express my thanks and best wishes to Grant Robertson. Both friends, both amongst the very best in Aotearoa

I like Anne’s piece here. I work hard to try to find ways forward that create space for opponents to step back from extreme positions (without conceding any of my own values) and for dialogue. It’s hard to do, but consider the alternatives

I think that’s generally right, but fishing is a particularly egregious example because so much of what they do is literally out of sight for everyone else. Industry sources used to tell me that it’s hard to operate profitably within the law so the incentive to cheat is strong

Reminds me of the time Forest & Bird revealed that almost all of the hoiho reported as bycatch (it’s mandatory) were on the small fraction of the fishing fleet that had MPI observers. The industry can’t be trusted to police itself

I just want to say how sad it is that a former Cabinet minister is being exposed to public opprobrium over a simple misunderstanding that was easily resolved, in the usual way, by cabin crew, the Captain of the aircraft, and the Police

Watching it too. It’s very good. Ironically we are currently isolating with probable Covid, and I’m reminded that at the time the series was set in, I estimated an infection would have a 15% probability of killing me, due to other conditions. Very grateful for public health and vaccination

Was thinking about this yesterday. I think the theory is that once you have learned a 2nd language, others follow more easily, presumably because you're changing brain wiring or some such. On the other hand it can be confusing for others when I'm mid-sentence in te reo and a Swedish word appears
