I've wondered about that a lot. For a long time, I thought it was an Old American English affectation employed on the right: "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility ... " But now I wonder if it's a nod to German. 🤔

And yet more evidence Stephen Miller is driving the bus. No way did Trump himself write this. He loves Project 2025 (so does Miller for that matter). And you can always tell when it's staff work. Abysmal isn't in Trump's lexicon.

The first time I ever saw him was on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert. He was laying flat on the stage on a star at the start of his set. The star elevated to a standing position, and he started wailin'. I'm convinced he was the inspiration for a ton of stage design in "This is Spinal Tap." 😆

My money is on Flynn for the veep nomination, too. I hadn't thought of it, but I think you're right: Flynn doing double duty as vice-president and JCS chair is just the sort of thing Stephen Miller would cook up. And I have little doubt Miller is driving the Trump bus.

Not to mention, there's no way to know in advance how well a candidate will run. On paper, Hillary had a great campaign staff, but "I'm With Her" may be the worst campaign slogan in modern times. Who cares who is with Hillary? Voters wanted to know whether Hillary was with them: "She's With YOU."

It's always been our greatest strength and our greatest weakness. I started getting worried in the 1990s, when the phrase "fair play" disappeared from the discourse. Especially on the right. It became "win at all costs" under the Gingrich speakership, and blatantly so.

What irks me is, should Trump be defeated, the Roberts Court will walk all this back at the first opportunity. They'll be sanctimonious as hell about it, too. "We do not have an imperial presidency, and never could," Justice Alito writes. "As this Court has always found, no one is above the law."

That's another way of putting it. But the idea is in the ballpark. To be honest, I thought they took the case to squash the idea of absolute immunity and articulate a qualified immunity for the presidency; maybe codify the DoJ memo and say a sitting president couldn't be charged with a crime. /1
