Didn't then-Chief Justice Burger try the "core functions" gambit to get Nixon off the hook in the Watergate case? If I remember correctly, even the Republican-appointed justices dug in their heels until he dumped it.

Once upon a time we had norms underlying our culture and guiding our institutional decisions. We're going to miss those norms and institutions once their erosion is complete. We're not going to like what gets substituted in their place.
