but All Politics Is Local, right? reading about Bill Clinton in the excellent book "A Fabulous Failure," Bill was never pro-union because he came from a state with no union density, but where Wal-Mart had a ton of power and influence.
so we gotta build strong unions from the ground up nationwide.

i think they're opportunistic hacks, if unions are powerful and popular the democratic party will be pro-union. i'm thinking of this effect: thenib.com/the-gay-marr...

i think the dems are *more* pro-union than they have been since the 70s. i have lots of criticism of Biden but his NLRB is genuinely great.
but it's a spectrum. democrats in highly union-dense areas are going to be more pro-union than in states where 1% of private sector workers are organized.

correct- plus the normal people, who usually support one political party, their first question about a candidate is often "are they a [democrat/republican]" and you do not want your explanation to be more than one word

Yeah. I think “new political party” is way less important than “new political organizing infrastructure in one local area,” even if they’re running people technically as Dems or doing ballot initiatives or not doing any electoralism at all
Gotta build ground up not too Dow

if you build a strong enough union, the democratic party will call *you.*

so yeah i think third parties (both existing ones and making a new ones) are a complete political dead end.
as always, i'm not a nihilist.
build a working-class power base through other ways (like a strong union movement) and make the politicians come to *us*, not the other way around.

i’m not a political scientist but i think analysis of why America’s system leads to two-party rule is pretty well-established. so all the above is unnecessary because the answer is “we’d need a new constitution first”

now, i’d love for that to happen- i think a lot of people would- but i don’t think posting online about “bernie sanders and the squad should ____” is gonna get it to happen. idk. seems like if they wanted to do that, they’d have done so already.

if we start from a successful ULP and work backwards, the most plausible way is for the left-wing of the Democratic party to essentially split. so, Bernie Sanders and the Squad would leave and form their own party.

those donations to Democrats aren’t just “we like the Democrats,” they’re attempts to buy influence. where are you getting the money from to start a 50-start left wing party? small donations? who’s raising that money?

as far as base of support: a leftist party has to be for The People, right? the workers, it’ll be pro-union. as someone whose day job is union organizer, good fucking luck getting union endorsements. union leadership is both tied to the democratic party, and pragmatic.

a previous attempt at this sort of thing, People’s Party, was… bad. it was just bad. everything about it sucked. the last people in the country who should be in charge of setting up a new party were. google it

if you’re not choosing between the two, you’re giving yourself more work by re-doing stuff both of them have done already, and then splitting the third-party-leftist vote even more. blech!
(oh, and either way the democratic party is gonna throw lawyers at blocking ballot access)

would it be a sort of focus on one of them, and if so, which one, and why not the other?
already, we’re starting to have to decide between the Bookchin-esque, more Libertarian Socialist Green Party and the Leninist Party for Socialism and Liberation. oof! not fun!

the first question immediately gets us into thorny territory. there are multiple leftist parties with some degree of ballot access across many states, specifically the Green Party and PSL. so, would ULP be created as a brand new thing, competing with these already-existing parties?

to start talking about this, we have to ask two things: who would be the people running the party, and who would be the base of support?
let’s call it Unnamed Leftist Party (ULP)

i'm going to take the question seriously.
you should trust me because i've worked in politics multiple times (staff for nevada state democratic party) but also disregard me because i'm an anarchist so of course i'm going to say it's not viable

when i worked for the NV Dems in 2019-202 and we had to pivot from using ~the app~ for reporting to a more-or-less old school system (with a google form), all our leadership was clearly staying up all night working on a new plan to replace the old one
