They serve kind of a similar purpose as guardians did in the first game, hanging out in inconvenient places to make you take alternate routes, best to be avoided early game, but don’t you worry… you’ll have ways to get your revenge before long!

You can beat them, but it's usually better to run away (if you're able) until you're more established. The first time I encountered one the game's genre suddenly changed to horror and I was no having it. lol

I couldn't beat them until later in the game when I was a little stronger. I'd run away. Others mentioned shooting bombs at them, that's the way to go.

Bomb/elemental arrows do quick work of them. They avoid light as well. In general they serve to block you from things you’re not ready for. Going melee early against them is a bad idea. You could stun them by hitting the eyes but they have too much hp for now
