Insects with raptorial legs are intriguing. They somehow appear both bashful & vigilantly poised - which is coded as incredibly cute in my brain. 🥺

They are so beautiful! Otherworldly. When I first moved here It took awhile to actually believe that there were pitcher plants native to NJ. Then I found one and just...delight! The bogs of the pine barrens are super fascinating.

You could culture some sliced store bought cranberries on some petri dishes filled with nutritional media. Identify what grows after a week. Talk about how fungi are everywhere - even inside fruit (endosymbionts). Ask students why they think this symbiosis evolved.

Very cozy hikes around Pinnacle, NC. While the views were fantastic, I was most excited to find a yellow and black flat millipede and many fan clubmoss in the undergrowth.

Lycophytes like clubmoss are among the most ancient surviving lineage vascular plants. Living fossils!

Yes. My immediate family... my working life. In therapy because these self deemed "omnipotent" patriarchs have deteriorated my psyche and self confidence. And when you bring up how it bothers you, gaslighting. I'm so angry and tired.

I feel this. I can work on these for short chunks of time, otherwise it makes me overwhelmed and frustrated. Learning to simplify and tactically use different brushes for distant subjects but it can still be a lot to process.

Tbh humans, cats, and dogs have always scared me more than any insect or arthropod. I grew up playing with live insects in my sandbox, building houses for the spiders and crickets. I'm confident that the societal fear of insects is learned and can be unlearned.

Gosh, this is relatable. You are not alone. The incessant belittlement chips away at curiosity & joy of learning that motivated us to pursue science. Why care if effort will be criticized/undervalued? I find older "experts" are often threatened by young talent. Fear of being replaced. Projection.

I see age discourse has begun again. Until I was 50, I never considered writing or art. In the 8 years since, I have written 13 novels, 30 stories, & raised my art skills from near zero to something well above that. I continue to learn & improve & hope to do so until the day I die. This is so heartening. Thank you! With a STEM day job I often feel like I'm running out of time (in my late 20s) and will never output enough to develop my skills and be deemed a "worthy" or "serious" creator. Which isn't true. You're living proof that it's never too late to grow & develop. 💚
