You can read a book, or not, depending on whatever criteria are most important for you based on how you perceive the voice of the author in their work. But if you wanna talk about an author with a bunch of people, expect that person’s crimes to be part of the conversation.

I threw away all the Larry Niven books I owned when I found out what he was up to during the so-called War on Terror. I kept all my Isaac Asimov books (he’s dead, and, his crimes aren’t reflected in his writing hardly at all). Neither of these decisions makes me a good or bad person.

👇🏻This, exactly, yes. “Cancelling” an author is, I think, not a group project. It’s an individual judgement call based on your relationship to a piece of work. It’s also not a binary. There are intermediate stages. You don’t need to go around defending the things you read at home to the community.

Trust me as someone who comes from a country where leaders get pushed out of their parties on a regular basis, *if* Biden leaves, and even *if* AOC were pushing him to behind the scenes (which I think is unlikely, but that’s just an opinion), her statements still look exactly like this right now.

She has a lot of popular power and has been able to leverage her power for good and we’re all (even here in Canada) better for it. The only person who has the power to get Joe Biden out of the race is Joe Biden, and the people who have influence over that decision are 100% not leftists like AOC.

What keeps Democrats from doing literally anything ever isn’t the law. It’s not physics. It’s a lack of willpower. Republicans know all this too well, unfortunately, and in January they’re gonna start tearing down the set so they can stage a new production.

because democracy isn’t maintained by unassailable laws, as if the constitution is a fundamental force like gravity. Democracy is maintained by the will of the people. If enough people support you, you can just DO stuff. It’s all theatre, in a sense. One can govern via suspension of disbelief.

I do appreciate the kind of person who can be a wonk and go through “here are all the historical precedents for packing the supreme court” or “here is a step-by-step legal procedure for changing candidates before an election,” but at the end of the day none of this matters…

You’re claiming to be able to read her mind. I’m saying that it looks the same from the outside whether she supports Biden because she thinks he’s the best candidate, or if she only SAYS she supports Biden because she has no power over who the nominee is and being labeled as “divisive” helps no one.

Cloudscape being nominated as best publisher in BC is pretty awesome, but to be fair, while we are not the only good publisher in BC, it’s a small field. Which is why Cloudscape exists. It’s not fair for Toronto & Montreal to have all the publishing power in the country. So we did something about it

Not if your comic is on Canvas. They don’t send you a contract to sign (or pay you anything) unless Webtoon invites you to the main list. I assume Tapas is the same. The contracts are bad, though.

So Optimates vs Populari is a dead issue, impossible to build a party around without blatantly lying. And yet, I often feel like these forces still haunt us like ghosts. We still have aristocrats & plebians, they’re just not distributed along party lines. Right & left both contain elites and the mob

Claiming, but not (like Julius Caesar) actually doing. The other thing the Enlightenment brought about was racism, and I don’t think you can flip the axis from horizontal back to vertical while inequality is an issue that politics can act on. It would require allowing racism to flourish.

Left vs right as the dominant axis in politics didn’t exist until the Enlightenment. For the Romans it was top vs bottom, or more accurately top vs middle, the Optimates vs the Populari. Which is my point. Fasicsts want to hide how far to the right they are by claiming a different axis.

The Populari was Julius Caesar’s political party, and they were exactly what it says on the tin- they were the ones pushing to expand power to more people and away from aristocrats. They weren’t left, though, because workers’ rights or civil rights were foreign concepts to them.

Every fascist & proto-fascist going back to Napoleon has been cribbing from Julius Caesar’s playbook. Basically they want you to ignore how far to the right they are, often even making repeated claims that they are neither right nor left (see: “national socialism”), & instead say, “no, I’m Populari”

It’s normal enough to only be worth a handful of news cycles for a party to turn on its leader and force them out, and we don’t even have a pre-established line of succession for picking another leader without redoing a leadership race (ie a deputy prime minister isn’t the same as a VP).

Granted we have different political systems, but it’s very strange to me as a Canadian to see people claim there “isn’t time” to let Harris run a full election campaign. You have five months. Canadian election campaigns last 5 to 7 weeks (they’re not allowed to start before the writ is dropped).

I know it's been retconned endlessly but I love the idea that the whole mutant hate thing in the Marvel Universe got started because this one racist asshole who isn't even a biologist got his awful editorial cartoons published in one newspaper and then wrote some fanfic about it.
