"Evil, young man, is treating people as things". Moist, for all his protestations that his crimes didn't hurt anyone, treated the victims of his frauds not merely as things, but as nonexistent. I think he was more shocked than anyone to discover that he has a conscience and that it can prick him.

I'm fond of Victor because he reminds me of Fred Cassidy in my favorite Roger Zelazny novel, Doorways in the Sand. Fred also goes to great lengths to stay in college — if he ever graduates, he loses a trust fund.
