Someone on the other site said this summed up Starmer. If true, that's sort of dazzling. But it also makes the point - again - that FPTP is wildly volatile and weird and we should throw it away.

Delighted to see the fall of the Tories, but this is a very strange election. Labour 🌹votes in UK general elections: 2017 — 12,877,918 2019 — 10,269,051 2024 — 9,650,254 Keir Starmer votes in his constituency, Holborn & St Pancras: 2017 — 41,343 2019 — 36,641 2024 — 18,884

Agreed entirely. They have one parliamentary term now to make real change a reality. No chance of repeating that result without concrete substantive achievements on which to build a case to the electorate next time.

I hope Labour get the message that they need to win the next election by tackling some of the manifold problems of a broken Britain- and paying for that means taxation, immigration, alignment with the EU, and public spending- namely all of the things they say they won’t do …

Wonderfully succinct summary of what’s happened in the British general election, from the incisive John Curtice on the BBC News website. In short — Labour support in England static from 2019, but Reform surge, and Tory & SNP support collapse. A record night for the Lib Dems, Greens, & Independents.

It sends a clear message that the Labour “Get Out the Vote” card gives pride of place to Sunak, Truss and Johnson. The expected outcome of this election is down to those three much more than to the positive appeal of Starmer as PM. (I realise I’m stating the obvious!)

Glad to see this piece on the New Popular Front from Piketty and CagĂŠ. While almost all the attention has been on the gains by the right, the success of a unified left with an ambitious program seems like just as an important story from the French elections. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

For most of my adult life there’s been a Tory cabinet minister or front bencher or two that I’ve respected for their wisdom or public spirit, even while hating their politics. Boris Johnson may have ensured their permanent absence.

Rawls has the concept of ‘the well-ordered society.’ Used to sound a bit dull; now a utopian fantasy.

it's a deep betrayal when you cannot trust the people whose job it is to interpret the rules. America has been let down today, and we will not forget

Imagine the societies we could choose to build, where there is an abundant social infrastructure, with democratic public spaces and support for the development of all. Public libraries are both remnants of what we've lost and signs for a better future.

Amazing to see the turnout, in the huge Makeba Auditorium at @hkw-pluriverse.bsky.social, for @leaypi.bsky.social's
three lectures on 'Moral Socialism'.
Lecture 3 -- on "What Can We Hope?" is this evening.
Proof that there is an audience for intellectually serious, radical political thinking!

Thanks, Nikhil. Joe and I certainly took ourselves to be in close agreement with Táíwò’s essay; we took ourselves to be exploring some issues prompted by reading his piece. It’s an important set of issues for sure.

Outstanding essay by Alex Niven in the Guardian, on the limits and longer-run dangers of an electoral strategy that underestimates the political complexities of the North and Midlands, brilliantly picking up and running with my idea of Labour's "spectral voters".

@joecguinan.bsky.social and @martinoneill.bsky.social observe that “decarbonization ultimately requires a sustained and deliberate act of capital destruction on a scale about twice that of the end of slavery”—so there is simply no substitute for winning state power:

Really tragic that the government doesn’t recognise the competitive advantage of UK universities. We’re one of the most open countries for faculty recruitment. Top universities in the US recruit primarily from each other and European universities close their markets. We should build not cut.

The awful truth is that Ed Davey playing drums on an exercise ball and falling off a balance board and dressing as Mr Blobby or whatever he’s doing today is still more dignified and grown-up than saying “we will solve the collapse in public services by cutting your taxes and stopping migration.”
