Outstanding essay by Alex Niven in the Guardian, on the limits and longer-run dangers of an electoral strategy that underestimates the political complexities of the North and Midlands, brilliantly picking up and running with my idea of Labour's "spectral voters".

@joecguinan.bsky.social and @martinoneill.bsky.social observe that âdecarbonization ultimately requires a sustained and deliberate act of capital destruction on a scale about twice that of the end of slaveryââso there is simply no substitute for winning state power:

Back home in York after an amazing week visiting universities in Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay.
Political philosophy is flourishing in Latin America, and it's been a delight to see it in reality, and to have so many wonderful conversations with brilliant colleagues and students.

My department is keen to develop our international links, esp (but not only!) with colleagues outside the Anglophone academic world. For anyone interested in applying for British Academy funding for a research visit with us, please drop me a line!

Really tragic that the government doesnât recognise the competitive advantage of UK universities. Weâre one of the most open countries for faculty recruitment. Top universities in the US recruit primarily from each other and European universities close their markets. We should build not cut.

The awful truth is that Ed Davey playing drums on an exercise ball and falling off a balance board and dressing as Mr Blobby or whatever heâs doing today is still more dignified and grown-up than saying âwe will solve the collapse in public services by cutting your taxes and stopping migration.â

I'm giving five talks in the next week (!).
The first of these will be tomorrow, on Community Wealth Building, as part of this excellent Joseph Rowntree Foundation event in York on 'Reimagining Wealth', alongside a great group of other speakers, as part of the York Festival of Ideas. đ

I'm sharing another video by @garyseconomics.bsky.social
Gary Stevenson is a genuinely gifted communicator when it comes to explaining the harms of wealth inequality and the case for much higher wealth taxes on the super-rich.
Worth 10 minutes of anyoneâs time:
