2 July - never since we have reliable observations has a hurricane reached category 5 so early in the season (15 days earlier than Emily 2005). Within 48 hours, the maximum wind speed increased by 83 knots (153 km/h). The storm, now downgraded to category 4, is heading towards Kingston, Jamaica.

Together with three Danish professors I am in today's issue of Politiken discussing global temperature records.
Neither the huge temperature increase before the onset of the 2023/24 El Niño nor the prevailing high temperatures after its end were expected by anyone.

The onset of the Greenland Ice Sheet ablation season is defined as the first of at least three days in a row with a surface mass balance below -1 km³ (= -1 gigaton). In 2024, this was on 24 June, 11 days later than the median 1981-2010.

DMI has undergone a major IT upgrade. We've now got rid of the starting hickups - time for an update.
The onset of the melting season (first of >= 3 days in a row with melting over > 5% of the ice sheet) was on 29 May, two days later than average.
Since then, the melt extent was well above average.

What was the weather like in Estonia on 15 June 1219? Partly cloudy with isolated falling flags.
On this day, the Danish king Valdemar II. Sejr (Conqueror) defeated the Estonians at Lyndanisse and built a town called Taani-linn (Danish castle) by the locals, today's Tallinn.

Nice try in our canteen. However, assuming that Schnitzel is meant to be German, we miss the Scottish part. We couldn't agree whether that should be haggis or whisky.

Temperatures in 2 m height and their anomalies from the average 1979-2000, forecast for days 7-10 (days 1-6 very similar). An unseasonally warm period lies ahead for most of Europe: Maximum temperatures of 15°C can be expected in Great Britain and Germany and close to 25°C in southern France.

In 1745, the Danish missionary Hans Egede wrote: “In Greenland, all winters are severe, yet they are not alike. The Danes have noticed that when the winter in Denmark was severe, as we perceive it, the winter in Greenland in its manner was mild, and conversely.” This is also the case right now.

Unseasonably cold in Denmark: The minimum temperature in Copenhagen was -7.7°C, which is the coldest November temperature since 1919. Roskilde was the coldest station in Denmark with a minimum temperature of -15.0°C, the coldest November night of the last 30 years. (Map: my colleague Sebastian Pelt)
