I think they got high on their own supply, frankly. What had been for external consumption -- a defense of Israeli righteousness in the international context -- ended up becoming the *internal* story -- maybe as newer immigrants, who encountered it abroad, brought it with them on aliyah.

A fun aspect of writing about Marx is that generations of academics have been introduced to his ideas by authors like Plamenatz, who simply could not be bothered to know what Marx wrote. (Marx *never* called ideology "false consciousness" or any other form of consciousness.)
