Cohort mates thought I was nuts spending like $7500 on a server when I started my lab. It may well last my entire career

for me what's unfortunate is both the erosion of autonomy and the injection, without consent, of a business-minded culture into an ostensibly not-for-profit, intellectual enterprise

We just carried out a series of upgrades on the server equipment that runs our data processing for both themusiclab.org and our brick-and-mortar lab
One company I can wholeheartedly recommend for scientific use cases is Synology. Their support folks are breathtakingly thorough, fast, and competent

We're a big dept (50 permanent faculty members) so there's always going to be turnover, but my point is just that actions the university takes that impact quality of life almost certainly play a role in whether people want to stay!

auckland uni sent out a template for grant proposals that applies an Agile tool (Lean Canvas) to research, asking for things like "Who are your end users" and "Implementation pathways and partners" and your "Unique value proposition" and actually I just vomited typing this all out

I have one correspondent who I am 99% sure sets an inbox rule rather than an actual vacation email purely so that he (of course it's a 'he') can insert himself into everybody's inbox repeatedly, reminding them all of his presence

NZ lettuce is great! The two-week long berry season is less conducive to pie baking..... Hahha Californian produce though is a point of envy for everybody, bucking the trend of some US states.....

I adore verb overgeneralization, it is the trifecta in developmental psych: (a) highly replicable, in that one observes it on a daily basis in kids; (b) scientifically informative; and (c) hilariously cute 6yo, incensed: of course we rode bikes! Why would we have *droven!??!?

One thing about the Discover feed is that it does not yet learn user preferences quickly. Like I've politely downvoted quite a few posts from furries (no judgment but not my thing!) and Discover is like "here how about these other furries"
