This is particularly important to understand because Trumpist authoritarianism is the descendent of Jim Crow far more than say Hitler or Pinochet or Orban, and it's going to look a lot more like 1930s Mississippi than 1930s Berlin.

Nothing is stopping every single Democratic elected official and apparatchik from taking the airwaves every single day to articulately and decisively repeat a set of cogent talking points about Trump (ie 45). Nothing. Dem PACs could be slamming him with ads now. Stop whining and do that.

There is no model in which these products become profitable. The overhead is astronomically high and will require defying the laws of physics to overcome. Meanwhile, they’re fleecing gullible businesses and governments blind on false promises of an everything tech that in fact does very little.

I came to my 14 year old with a concern about social media. He literally took his glasses off, rubbed his temples, and asked: “what have the moms on the internet said now?” 😯🫤😆

Mississippi is the poorest state in the US.

Even though the state gets federal welfare funds, it is difficult to get welfare.

The money was all getting stolen, and they got away with it.

Now the journalists who exposed the story are facing a lawsuit and jail.

We don't have a crisis of attendance. We have a society-wide mental health crisis. We have a crisis of mass disablement. We have a cost of living crisis. Attendance is a symptom. Individual-level positive & negative incentives to get students to class solve nothing on their own.

You do not have to be a lawyer, a historian, or a political scientist or even like the U.S. very much to understand the very basic fact that the U.S. was made to be king-less & this court-who swore an oath to uphold the constitution-just gave us kings. They should be sacked. Full stop. No nuance.

America can accept this Supreme Court as legitimate and its rulings as the final word - or it can have true democracy and a functioning state. But not both.

Instead of panicking or yet another postmortem (forgive me I've been Black this whole time so not much of this is breaking for me), link up with like minded folk for practical solidarity. Shield those more vulnerable than you and figure out how you can soften structural abandonment.

This. If I thought there was one jot of dexterity in the Dem leadership I might entertain changing candidates. But there is no evidence of the tiniest iota of political ingenuity or talent at any national helm right now. I do not at all trust them to roll out a new candidate.

That doesn’t mean you drop the slogan, it means you persuade people that the slogan they don’t like actually means the thing they do like. We do this so we can keep talking about shifting funding - a conversation that *was not happening* b4 the slogan. Meanings change over time, as you point out.

Yes. Being clear eyed about the terrible stuff people actually like doesn’t mean giving up support where you actually have it. People don’t like the slogan “defund the police.” People really like the idea of spending money on social support other than police.

Selfish adventurism is the perfect way to describe so much of what is taken to be “revolutionary” by a certain sector of the left. It’s like baby you’re not a hero if you’re not saving anybody or building anything.

This is why, when I got “canceled” for a tweet, I refused to affirm that “cancel culture” is a thing because the made-up moral panic around it was always obviously a stalking horse for straight-up right-wing state-sponsored censorship of the left. Dipshits who got played still won’t admit it.
