4/ And then I grew up in rural SW Ohio, surrounded by people who had emigrated from Appalachia to work on the railroad & in the gravel pits. They thought I - & my parents - talked “funny”. Then I moved to California at the age of 32, where I was teased for talking like I did.

2/ My dad, born in 1919, was born in the US, but his family went to the Old Country right after he was born to straighten out some things after the A-H Empire collapsed at the end of WWI. He returned to the US -Jersey City- at age 7, where he was bullied by his schoolmates for not speaking English.

Yeah, but my language history is weird so it’s ok. 1/ My mom came to US just before I was born. Her 1st lang was Plaatdüütsch (Emalandisch). She & I learned English at the same time, which is a whole nother story.

I grew up near Cincinnati too, out in Morrow, near Kings Island. Lived 2 years in Muncie, then 8 years in Cleveland. Have now lived in California for 22 years. My vocab is all over the place!

I suspect that frontage road was what did it for me too. We don’t actually have those kind of roads where I grew up, so the name I have for it is when I picked up elsewhere.

I commiserate with you, too! My wife is also allergic to celery. NO FUN! I started making my own herb/spice mixes (Italian, bouquet garni, montreal steak seasoning, etc) just so I can make sure there's no peppers or celery in them!

On the advice of an allergist, I take 2 H1 & 2 H2 blockers every day. That keeps the low-level-that-can't-be-avoided stuff mostly so I don't suffer too much.

I am allergic to bell peppers, and some hot peppers, too. I've been tested; it's not the capsaicin. Don't know what it is that I'm allergic to, but trying to avoid any vegetable peppers is so difficult! Whenever it says "spice" that's some kind of vegetable pepper. Sigh.
