It’s been a long time so I don’t even remember details, but it takes a LOT for me to go, “Oh, COME ON,” at a book, but I recall doing that more than a couple times.

I did read the one set on the moon, but… I think he needed a co-writer or a sensitivity editor, because I did not believe his female protagonist in that one. I’ve got his most recent in wishlist (or I might own it) but not priority.

The wellness to alt-med to fascism pipeline is VERY real, and they prey on the most vulnerable people they can extract cash from. And they will 100% profit from flattering the ones with the credit card, while increasing the misery of the most vulnerable people in the family.

The big reason to avoid the uncredentialed ones? Especially any that claim to do marriage & family work? STRONG associations with the Adoption as Missionary Field set, the conversion therapy set, and forcible compliance for children. It’s not 100%, but reputable psych doesn’t do that shit.

Oh, it was PERFECT! It was a great adaptation and it got every beat. (My ONLY disappointment was I had cast Mindy Park as Korean.)

A reputable psychologist or therapist will be DELIGHTED to talk about where they graduated from and what they specialized in, and you can check. (They’ll also have a provider number, which the non-quals will not have.)

The good news is those unqualified types can’t take insurance! The bad news is a lot of licensed and qualified psychologists are opting out of insurance because it’s absolute hell. So being able to get care with a copay is the strongest test, but if you go out of network, ask for documentation.

Third: Credentialing is a state matter, so in some states, it’s perfectly fine for a minister or a bible school grad or someone with a certificate from a for-profit woo school to call themselves a religious therapist, a counselor, or an unlicensed psychotherapist. Yeah, this is bad.

ALSO: It’s unethical for a psychologist or mental health professional to sell you ANYTHING other than their professional time, including workbooks. It’s especially unethical to sell you supplements or the pro’s own book. Conflicting revenue streams are the sign of ethical problems.

PSA: Psychologists have NEVER EVER EVER had prescribing rights. We don’t want ‘em, you WANT a pro watching you who has zero ego involved in the drugs you’re taking. We’ll work with your GP or a psychiatrist for you, but walking scrip pad is the med school grads. We’re software.
