Something I really wish people in leftist spaces would remember is that military service is one of the few viable paths of upward mobility in the US, especially if you’re in a situation where paying for college is impossible.
I’m not saying that’s a good thing, but it is absolutely a reality.

I hate how prevalent and insidious the military is and how it chews up people up. Having family that served in various ways and wars made me see that human cost up close in many ways. Don’t get it twisted.
I heard a liberal talking about “the kind of people who join the military” and I wanted to get all punchy-punchy. As you say, a lot of that “kind” can’t go to college otherwise. People join the military for a ton of different reasons.
yeah as a poor person the worst financial decision i've ever made was not joining the military. a few years doing inventory or some bullshit in the navy would've utterly transformed my future
Nothing but respect for the people that have served until provided individual reasons to the contrary.
And the lack of care that most suffer from after their service is the most criminal part.
