They’ve certainly apportioned enough policymaking power to themselves that a Democratic President won’t be able to reverse many of their choices. But at least two, maybe three of the Republican appointees are eager to retire.

Yeah I agree with David about the MAGA jurists sensing what is possible, but they've also laid a lot of groundwork in the intervening years. And as you suggest, Alito and Thomas are old enough to just YOLO this. Might depend on how much they listen to their wives.
