This is a prequel, though, so there's some latitude there, and it's not just following the pattern of the first novel. Also Baldree doesn't seem like he buys his own hype the way Cline does.

Sometimes when a writer's sophomore outing gives you exactly the same thing it's a bad sign. ARMADA proved Ernest Cline was a one-trick pony with nothing in the bank.

I am constantly befuddled by people who want to redesign state and city flags based on some weird made-up flag rules. Folks, these flags are purely decorative. No ship or military unit is flying the flag of Pennsylvania or Pittsburgh. Who cares if they're legible from a quarter mile away?

This isn't a map of of an underground Turkish City. It's a map of Castle Greyhawk from Dungeons & Dragons. One of the ruins is even labeled "The Tower of Zagyg", for Pelor's sake.

TWENTY-SIXTH FILM OF 2024: "The Muppets Take Manhattan" (1984). Honestly the only two things I remembered about this movie was the Muppet Babies sequence and Kermit getting amnesia.

TWENTY-FIFTH BOOK OF 2024: "Bookshops & Bonedust" by Travis Baldree" (2023). I liked the vibe of the first book, and this is more of that, so yay! Still not sure if there's more to this than just vibes. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Audiences don't care about fictional politics. You have to make them care by making the characters involved interesting; making the politics situations analogous to real life; or engaging with the philosophical principles at stake. If you're not going to do that, don't foreground the politics!

TWENTY-FOURTH BOOK OF 2024: "How to Sell a Haunted House" by Grady Hendrix. The thing I love about Hendrix's books is that sure, maybe this is a manifestation of childhood trauma and undiagnosed mental illness, but maybe it might also just be an evil puppet, or maybe both?

TWENTY-FOURTH FILM OF 2024: "The Great Muppet Caper" (1981). My memory had reduced this to disjointed fragments -- Kermit and Fozzie being twins, Gonzo in an overcoat, Charles Grodin being skeevy, Miss Piggy crashing through a window on a motorcycle. The actual movie isn't much more coherent.

TWENTY-FIRST BOOK OF 2024: "Logan's Run" by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson (1967). The movie is weird and the book is weirder -- but it makes more sense when you place it in the proper context of alarmist works about contemporary youth culture like "Wild in the Streets."

Some of the comedy bits aren't as impactful as they could be. The big swing for the fences scene, where one character strips down in a panic, is the only time we see the character overreact to that extent. As a result it feels like it was dropped in from another script.
