It's fascinating how ingrained this assumption is, given that you'd think there would be basically no environment better suited to getting past prejudices and recognizing our shared humanity than fighting next to someone for years.

I’ve said before in other threads, but before boot camp, I had literally never been the only white guy in the room. It was jarring to realize how racially segregated my childhood was. I don’t know how folks don’t come away from an experience like that realizing that people are just people.
