Fond of real science and imaginary worlds. Cursed with a knowledge of software engineering. Might have coined the term 'Dire Millennial'.

A recurring theme of politics in India seems to be looking at some US nonsense and thinking, 'ha, amateurs! I can do that TEN TIMES AS MUCH'

Yeah, I remember 'look how much time he's spending not at work' articles about each of the preceding 3+ presidents. So it's not an entirely new thing.

Social media helps us know the thoughts and opinions of a range of other people previously impossible. Sometimes I wish it didn't.

The problem I see with that argument is that it assumes the podcasters are sensible people with knowledge and appropriate caution of the legal system in which they operate. Which is, I would say, unproven. At best.

I really strongly recommend not arguing with Kathryn about laws, lawyers, or the way the legal system works. I have seen many try. Few have survived, none have prevailed.

Nicely stated. The actual reason they wanted small government was that, in the absence of government intervention, they were the ones with the power to do what they wanted to everyone else.

Just once I want to see an interviewer who responds appropriately to these 'undecided voters', by going, "Really?! You can't decide? Between *these* options, you can't decide? What the fuck is wrong with you?!"

Being a programmer isn't about meetings or writing code or fixing bugs. It's about running a job in your terminal and watching IP addresses stream down the screen with a progress bar so that you feel like a sick hacker

My experience of military service members is that nearly all of them take that ‘oath to defend the Constitution’ thing very seriously. I think the fact that he took a similar oath and clearly doesn’t give a shit about it probably bothers them.

It does make me question ‘electability’ arguments, though. If this man - a criminal, boorish idiot with no values beyond his own self-interest - is an ‘electable’ candidate, why is anyone confident of what the word even means?

Yep. Popular with the same people who decided that ‘spend’ was a noun, because they’re too busy and important and modern to say ‘expenditure’.

We coded up an early alpha of Representative Democracy, put it in production, and only later realized there was no viable update path for most of the fundamental systems.

Good luck! And, from experience... it gets easier. Either you figure out that you're comfortable doing less prep work, or you get a lot of practice doing the prep work and get good at it. Or both!

You probably know this, but... the 'be honest when you don't know stuff' strategy works with clients, too. Most have been burned at least once by someone who said 'We know everything', and didn't. 'We'll figure it out together' is a better message!

Very little! Unless you're doing something staggeringly wasteful like so-called AI or crypto nonsense, a significant majority of the energy you use to mess around on websites is the energy required to run your personal computer.

Having been in a similar, albeit lower-profile, situation, I’ll go ahead and say I’m not finding it surprising at all. Company leaders love to talk about their values, but *hate* when employees expect them to live up to those values.

Newsletter: Apple's AI announcement suggests that they're distancing themselves from the AI bubble, framing AI as a product feature rather than the next big thing- and how OpenAI agreed to one of the worst deals in tech history to barely integrate ChatGPT.

Making things that people want and that work is a fine way create a viable business. VCs don't want a viable business. They want a multi-billion-dollar world-changing unicorn. If you have a viable business, they'll push it to become one. And then it won't be viable anymore.

I think we won't replace CEOs with AI, not because it can't be done, but because part of the purpose of the corporate system is to provide jobs with high status, high pay, and no real accountability to the members and scions of the owner class.

When I was in 6th grade we had a mock trial. As the defense attorney, I won the case in part by calling the prosecutor to testify about a botched immunity deal. I had kind of assumed that was the sort of thing you only got to do when everyone involved was ~12 years old.

Some dipshit posted the original on LinkedIn and I accidentally did more research. The scare quotes are very appropriate. (The survey platform got their data from those shitty 'take a quick survey for 2 snekogems' mobile games, and the demographics are self-reported. It's spectacularly unreliable.)
