Idk if I believe "absolute power corrupts absolutely" but a thing I definitely do believe is that giving precisely the amount of power a forum mod has to someone who volunteers to have that power works out badly in basically every instance it's been tried.

Don't want to toot my own horn here, but one time I asked for mod power to delete a bunch of spam, and then I deleted the spam, kept the power, and basically never used it again

I don’t know what fundamental law leads to the people who fight the mods being even worse than the mods themselves, but I suspect it’s related to the phenomenon where the biggest Trumpers either rule their HOA with an iron fist, or are in a interminable blood feud with their HOA.
