So, in the vein of the TTRPG designer commentaries that have been making the rounds, I decided to do a thread of all the weird Easter Eggs I hid in my 18-page Horror mystery TRUCK...

Tried out the Caravan Sandwich demo and was absolutely blown away. Like, you're going through the drama of returning to your home town, but your hometown is on a beautiful, ignored alien planet.
And you spend the whole time climbing everything just to see what you'll find.

Finally, hidden in the CW, a reference to a film that has, somehow, influenced countless of my past projects.
That's right, folks: MONSTER TRUCKS. The film that dared to ask the question, "What if the Loch Ness Monster lived inside my pickup truck?"

Moving on to the itch page, you should absolutely check out the touchstone links.
With every game and supplement I make, I always spend way too long coming up with the exact right clips or tweets or articles to hyperlink, but these four clips (bizarrely) nail the tone of TRUCK.

There's other weird Easter Eggs that I put in just for me:
- Martha's Scrapyard is a reference to Martha's Vineyard, where Jaws was filmed.
- 555-2368 is the Ghostbusters phone number (among others).
- Africa Ranch is a thing Texans do where they import herds of gazelles to hunt??

There's also a few fun Easter Eggs on the napkin for people who speak Spanish, notably that the Spanish is absolutely dreadful:
- Amigos doesn't have an E in it.
- El Pareja isn't a thing. La Pareja is, but it means "The Couple" rather than La Parilla ("The Grill").

Fun fact: One of the sinister organisations that NPC Sam Booker might work for is actually a real group that tried to do that in Loving County in the early 2000s.
There's a whole New York Times article about it: nytimes.com/2006/02/25/u...

Heart County, Texas is a hellish alternate universe version of the real-life Loving County, Texas. It's a version where the oil dried up in the seventies and it's been preyed on by scammers ever since.
But Loving County seems much nicer and, also, much weirder...

Then the map, which is hand-drawn on a napkin.
I call it: Mapkin.
My biggest worry with this is how much food residue should the napkin have, so you know it's a napkin, but you also aren't like, "Who the hell drew a map on a napkin they wiped their face (...or whatever) on?"

Both abilities are, of course, riffing on John Carpenter's CHRISTINE, which features a magic 1950s car that does similar things.
Here's a clip from the end of the film (but you should absolutely watch Christine if you haven't yet.)

The number plate of the Truck is 99-PBLMS, because (a) it's funny, (b) it's a great, slightly dated song, and (c) it references The Truck's special weapon of "Pop Radio (d6 Stress)" and its "Restoration" ability, which allows The Truck to alter its number plate, color, & decals.

I also wanted The Truck to be modern to (a) contrast it with the fantastic evil truck in Duel and (b) to blend in.
I ended up drawing strongly from the Freightliner Cascadia (which, Google tells me, is the most common truck in the US) for the "Freightstar Deluvia".

The Truck itself is also kinda eerie for a couple of reasons, but the thing I found that worked best is that, aside from the bullbar, it doesn't have a speck of dirt on it.
Compare it to the alternative:

Firstly, the iris of the Goblin Archives logo doesn't have the comic-book-dot texture of the rest of the logo, so it's kinda looking at you like a weird HAL eye that you wouldn't notice unless you look close.

In the smallest county in the US, a truck with no driver is killing the last six residents, one by one.
You don't know how or why. You don't know who's behind it.
You just know you have to do something about it.

This mystery was written for Liminal Horror's TWISTED CLASSICS JAM, as it is, of course, a riff on Steven Spielberg's Duel & John Carpenter's Christine (among others).
Check out the jam (with many excellent submissions, current and upcoming) here:

Bizarrely, it's actually also prescient of the Reality TV era, which really took off in the 2000s with Big Brother and such. Really weird piece of media in that way.

Honestly, it was so much fun to watch it be played. Even though there's still mechanics I want to tinker with, it's so good watching people nail the cross-country interludes, interuptions, and moments of downtime while avoiding huge Kaiju, aliens, and the military.
