One of the best pieces of advice I ever heard was to build a portfolio of things you want to make more of, not what you think other people want.
Choose your best works, your most self indulgent works, and make them the highlights.
That's been my thought while working on a page for music commissions. The worst thing in the world would be to build a name and reputation that isn't me, and it takes as much work either way. Might as well put my whole self into it.
i really love this piece of advice too! someone said also, don't put things in your portfolio that you hate doing or don't want to do as a job, and i was like, "huh! so simple, and yet, my brain would never have thought of that" lol
I was on a panel where we were asked if we'd been in a situation where publishers asked us to tone down our representation/queerness/etc in a book.
My answer was that they looked at my portfolio and still hired me for the job, so they knew what they were getting into bringing me on.
absolutely, not only bc you'll be asked to work on what you already are interested, but it will be your best work. no matter how profesional you try to be, the gigs you enjoy will transmit a lot more
