there are STS folks like Langdon Winner who have written about this distinction. it might have been latour or some other philosopher of tech but this point of view is usually called “instrumentalist” and it doesnt recognize any value laden aspects or political affordances of tech so it kinda sucks

“AI” is the culmination of the tech industry. Every time you use it, you destroy the environment, erode labor protections, endanger workers overseas, enrich the ruling class, and make something unforgivably worthless, all at the same time – and it's all hidden from you in a frictionless distraction.

I have never truly understood why having a whole bunch of pets was a bad thing. “You mean, if it were up to me, I could spend all my free time with my dogs and cats and birds and shit instead of humans? Sign me the fuck up”

I think the thing that frustrates me most about boomers as an archetype is how so many of them fell short in the strides they tried to make and possibly were even more reactionary and regressive than their own parents

Social media is literally gambling for our attention like a casino analyzing just when a player stopped participating, and thinking about “how can we get this person to stay here longer to spend more time?”

“Unless we win forever, the United States isn’t worth having” is both the animating purpose of the Confederacy and the campaign platform of a major party in 2024 and somehow this is not a problem that “serious people” even care about, let alone making an issue to the general electorate

for every one we mark as “privileged” when they envy the poor… maybe this is why. poverty sort of absolves you from most responsibilities beyond your direct needs and those closest to you. no?
