weird that the Tory vote held up so much here in London and in Scotland, of all places, despite totally collapsing pretty much everywhere else. Both areas where Reform have less purchase maybe?

If open access has in some sense "failed" it's a failure of collective action, and to some extent a question of path dependency. I would also say that accusations of failure ignore the millions of green open access papers that are now out there in the world #OpenRepos24

"Capture of academic workflows" is a neat summation of the way large academic publishers have essentially become data clearing-houses and data analytics companies, tracking every interaction with the scientific literature to repackage and sell on these datasets. #OpenRepos2024

A lack of systematic review of associated data in journal articles results in undocumented, partial or otherwise broken datasets. It's no one's job to check these, and hence the systems in place just don't work #OpenRepos2024

There’s already an almost infinite pool of website data for AI to draw upon, and not all of those websites depend on traffic, though of course nearly all of that material will be subject to copyright law

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, the least explored of the first six Sabbath records, for me at least. Definitely a decline was occurring, only to be reversed by the Dio years at the the end of the 70s. But there are some killer riffs and the artwork is great

I met Albini briefly at a later ATP, which Shellac curated. We were in the chalet next door to theirs and they came round to give us their beer as they could tell we were enjoying ourselves and they had a rider they weren’t going to drink. That showed their spirit of equality, no rock star BS!

And of course the early edgelord-isms that he later reevaluated and tried to learn from. I just today read the Shellac interview in The Wire and he retained that questioning spirit right until what turned out to be the end

RIP Steve Albini, “At Action Park” is a top ten all time album for me and Shellac are the band I’ve seen most live, the first time at ATP in 2000 when they blew my mind. Last time was at a festival in Portugal in 2018 and they were no less great then

A thought arises from discussions around e-resource licening: Many of the existential-level problems that librarians face (e.g. big deals, the shift to open access) are to do with collective action and the difficulties thereof. This in turn makes me think library schools should teach game theory!
