Is this true? Many of my own local Facebook groups are closed, because people just don't want to bear with randos snooping in, commenting, reacting, or even looking at pictures, with a kind of strict group admission policy along the lines of "prove you should be part of this group" kind of thing.

At least in my state, official school FB groups and pages can't be closed because of the Open Meetings Act. That's going to vary by state, but I rarely run across an official institutional school FB group or page that is closed.
