I mean, this way of thinking also assumes that "trying" something will always be better and won't, you know, blow up even worse than the thing it's replacing. If you skip the VP and pick some last-minute replacement with limited vetting there's no promise voters will like him/her more.

Here's a "just spitballing" idea: swap Kamala out for Mayor Pete. I don't really see her as an asset, particularly. She's not a -liability-, mind you, just... neutral. It would put the spotlight on him, without changing the top of the ticket, and he can more than handle it
