so you think they're telling the truth in their public statements — where their consistent message has been that the dems would be screwed if they replace biden — but then lying off-record privately to reporters? not saying it's impossible, but it would be an odd tactic

The substance of the message is the same in both, though: warning that Democrats shouldn't try to drop Biden. It could be earnest fear! They're just as susceptible to imagining a perfect "Generic Democrat" as anyone! But the messages aren't really in conflict and can be read as a dare.
