Both abortion cases were punts, not vindications. You do not, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to the Supreme Court

It's so strange how Clinton-esque neoliberal brain worms have alienated Dem leadership from its base (Black voters, labor, such as it is, women) such that the party basically chides them constantly and they can't meet the moment. Sure, it's a big tent but who do they think they're messaging to?

Is there such a thing as pleasure, joy or validation or is there just dissociation/disengagement? Because the latter is the only one I understand.

I hate acknowledgement of my birthday from my friends, family or coworkers, and I actively avoided having any parties as a child. These people have a weirder relationship to their birthday than I do.

The entire genre of dancehall (more or less) came about when a reggae producer repurposed a "rock" beat he accidentally discovered on a casio kid's toy keyboard.
People recently discovered the long-anonymous Japanese woman who programmed the beat was in fact a huge reggae fan and scholar.

It let's them reinforce a heads we win tails you lose narrative which the discussion about Biden not being the nominee is already pushing.

There is a huge disparity between what appears to be at stake and the current administration’s commitment to norms. I don’t understand how anyone who thinks this is existential or even important would just be like, ‘Well if the people vote for it 🤷🏾’ but that was kinda his response to all this.

One political party is sometimes responsive to pressures and storylines of the mainstream media. The other is a fascist cult of personality. It's not surprising which the op ed page targets.

And some of that is misogyny, or misogyny with extra steps or pretext, but she was also the singular target of an influential media environment for decades that national Dems have never really understood.

I really think the cultivated antipathy to Hillary, specifically, and its effect was underweighted in 2016. I had relatives who still spouted Vince Foster conspiracy theories. Who still resented her policy involvement when Bill was president. Who still nurtured those grudges, fostered by AM radio.

The "presumptively immune" framework seems to set up a qualified immunity situation where everyone gets one free bite at the apple until SCOTUS weighs in to decide there shouldn't be immunity with prospective applicability only.

It's a bit problematic how Biden has (a) narrow, limited power to have his agency draw up a student loan forgiveness process consistent with the statutes passed by Congress; but (b) complete immunity to tell everyone at Dept of Edu, "mark those loans as $0 or I'll put you in a pine box."

There are two elements to the immunity decision that are particularly extreme in a way that many will miss: (1) motive is irrelevant and (2) immune acts are not just excluded from prosecution, they’re excluded from evidence.

I just want electronics I spend a fair amount of money on to work properly. 3 pairs of Bluetooth earbuds, 3 Bluetooth keyboards, 2 PS5 controllers, 6 Nintendo Switch controllers, a Steam Deck. I'm conscientious with my goods, and I don't have the energy for an RMA process every time I buy something.

At least this current crop of Dems. LBJ and some other hardnosed pols from the past may have. But seems like it makes the presidency more attractive to people who would be interested in taking advantage of this in addition to the normal sociopathy you need to run for the office.

Big "embrace sincerity" energy from him. And some of that's schlocky, or cringe or involves frosted tips or bowling shirts with flames and crocs and that's fine. (I still love that takedown of his Times Square restaurant though)

Let's do something a bit different for my usual nerdy SFF lists. For pride month I'll do 1 queer SFF book a day from each of the past 30 years. Will add 1 to the thread each day (and 2 today I guess because I'm 1 day behind).

❌ The taste was that of the little crumb of madeleine which on Sunday mornings at Combray (because on those mornings I did not go out before church-time), when I went to say good day to her in her bedroom, my aunt Léonie used to give me, dipping it first in her own cup of real or of lime-flower tea.

"I do not exist as a human being in seemingly fundamental and important ways" and disappointment I didn't die in my sleep are a thought and feeling I wake up with every morning but work to distrust and disbelieve. This is a fine way of being.

If you use mindful observation to create distance from thoughts/feelings, how do you decide which thoughts/feelings to engage with or believe (if any)? I just end up in a paranoid place where none of them can be trusted, undermining any sense of self or existence. My brain is always lying to me.
