yeah i don't have any special knowledge of biden's condition, but what i've seen and read suggests he's still mostly with it, most of the time. but also, the bar for staying out of a nursing home seems rather different from the bar for being elected to another four years as commander in chief

To be clear OP is not espousing that view, just characterizing it, so please don't @ him. And I know it's a bit of a straw man and yes OF COURSE the media plays a role in shaping consensus and driving narratives but it just is not this one-way street that too many self-styled media critics imagine

I'm obviously not here to defend the NYT, but this notion that no one in the US knows what to think until the New York Times tells them is just so Bluesky-pilled. I had friends and family who couldn't care less about the NYT texting me during & after the debate like "gah what's wrong with Biden??"

fair! i also have to keep reminding myself that for a certain set of folks, the "washington post" in my bio probably triggers a whole bunch of priors that are very understandable, especially if they don't realize i have no role in my employer's day-to-day coverage of national politics or elections

Definitely possible these leaks are tactical. Seems less plausible but not inconceivable that there's a whole grand strategy like the one you describe. If I had to guess, I'd say more likely there are differing opinions within Trump's camp and there's less message discipline off-record than on.

there could be some truth to that! but even accounting for that possibility, i think the discrepancy between republicans' public statements and private off-record ones is worth noting

you mean bc i've posted some things that question biden's fitness, i'm bringing out the folks most certain that it's treason to do so? that is quite possible if so. it is all too easy to mistake one's personal experience of a platform for a representative sample, and i'm sure i'm no exception.

lol! i actually think you can make a solid case he's been a pretty effective president in achieving dem priorities against a lot of headwinds. but as the shady investment advisers are required to say, past performance is not a guarantee of future results

but at the risk of insulting some folks' self-importance, this is bluesky, not the convention stage, and nothing we skeet is of any tactical importance to speak of. so we can probably chill with the idea that anyone who posts a critical thought about biden is bringing about the fall of the republic

i think when you frame it this way it's a stronger argument. *tactically* it makes sense for anyone representing the party to publicly stand by biden until or unless he steps down, unless they think he's so hopeless that it's worth the risk of undermining him.

Is sticking with Biden the correct choice for Democrats? Quite possibly! I can see compelling arguments both ways. No doubt it would be chaotic to replace him at this point. Also seems clear he's a weaker candidate than 4 yrs ago. But few folks on here seem afflicted with any degree of uncertainty.

It's been interesting to see the consensus on this site harden in realtime around the idea that not only is sticking with Biden the obvious correct choice for Dems no matter what other facts might emerge, but that anyone who suggests otherwise is either dishonest, an idiot or a handmaiden of fascism

so you think they're telling the truth in their public statements — where their consistent message has been that the dems would be screwed if they replace biden — but then lying off-record privately to reporters? not saying it's impossible, but it would be an odd tactic

Getting older sucks and is probably only going to suck more the older I get. But the one true consolation of age I have found so far, as someone who struggles at times with trying to please everyone, is having a gradually diminishing reservoir of fucks to give for those who can't be pleased.

It’s unfortunate they put in the constitution that you can only nominate someone for president if they’re either over 80, a convicted felon who paid off a porn star, or have brain worms and a taste for barbecued dog, but that’s the system we’ve got. At least once we elect them they get full impunity

While they concurred on punting the case back to lower courts, Thomas, Alito and Gorsuch disagreed with the majority opinion establishing content moderation as speech.

SCOTUS' ruling on social media was a bigger deal than it first seemed. Content moderation and ranking algorithms are now First Amendment-protected speech, and that has big implications for the internet. My newsletter today: www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

The Supreme Court vacates and remands the lower court rulings on both the Texas and Florida social media content moderation laws, essentially punting on any kind of First Amendment ruling.

The Supreme Court is about to rule on Texas and Florida laws that restrict online content moderation. The states say tech giants squelch users' speech when they moderate misinfo, hate etc. Tech firms say content moderation is their own First Amendment right, and the laws violate the Constitution.

Agree with this to an extent. But how they choose to report on it is also informed to some degree by what takes resonate with broad audiences. It's a feedback loop for sure but not a one-way causal thing.
