I’m lucky in that my three best friends when I was 17 are still three of my best friends. We don’t see each other too often but we are pretty much still who we were then, with some of the sharp edges sanded off by forty years of living. It’s a good feeling.

I’ve lost track of my friends of that era, although my entire family still lives in my hometown, but the one I’ve known since we were kids is just like that—& I’m lucky to have a second set of friends from when I lived abroad who’ve known me since I was 18, including one who’s like a brother to me.
