We're now experiencing a heat dome in Portland, and this will be the longest-lasting in our city's history. Notables:
Friday: Upper 90s
Saturday: 101
Sunday: 101-105
Mon: 100
Tues: 100
This is significant for so many reasons, and not just bc many people here don't have AC.
Since the NOAA began tracking daily temps for PDX in 1938, we've seen, ya know, a trend. In Portland, 100 degrees has, in the past, been quite rare. From 1938-1976, 23 years didn't see a single 100 degree day while another six had just one 100+ day in a year.
After college—late 90s— some friends & I found out that people grow opium poppies in their gardens here a lot. For a couple years we raided gardens all over town & drank a lot of poppy tea. At the time, poppy pods were ripe for consumption about July 4th. Nowadays mid-May, early June.
