Slight variance in forecast from weather.gov, weather.com & Weather Channel (sheesh ads on that site ugh).
Gov site has five days +100° days, from today-Tues which would match the record in a year.
Weather.com has four, and weather channel has...two. Current models point to 4+.
Stay safe, everybody!

I say all that to say this: the next time anybody tries to give you shit about how "climate change isn't blah blah," let them know this info because it's proof as we are living it. It's getting hotter and drier, & we still don't have enough homes w/ air conditioning. Bc it wasn't always like this!

What we're colliding w/ over the course of the holiday weekend is a trifecta of bad news. Highest temps of the year, w/ relative humidity dropping to 21.37, lowest of the month, while the temps are the highest. Couple that w/ a dew point which is way too close to the humidity, add in fireworks...ugh

This has been exacerbated by what would have been, if not for multiple consecutive days of rainfall, the 4th driest April on record. We are currently above the average rainfall, but we haven't had enough rain recently to stave off wildfires, esp those caused by fireworks.

Oh btw, the record temp for July 5 is currently 98 degrees. It was set last year and will be broken tomorrow. We're going to set records for probably the next five days. Sure that's weather, but it's also an ongoing trend. Something something climate, something something change.

What I'm trying to say is obvious, right? Heat domes are becoming more and more frequent, and this weather has shown how correct the predictions were. 2010's had 169 days at 90+. So far in the 2020s: nearly 100 not counting today. The 1960s didn't have 100 90+ days in their entire decade.

2024 has been the warmest on record, w/ average high temps so far of 61.45 degrees. Previously, 2023 was the hottest yet, averaging 61.22 degrees. If we do reach four consecutive 100+ days, this will be the earliest ever. 2023 was mid-August, 2022 late July.

2023 actually had 4 (Aug 13-16). That's my bad. By decade, the 40s had 5 years w/ 100 degree days. 50s: 2 60s: 4 70s: 6 80s: 9 90s: 6 00s: 7 10s: 5 20s: 5 (2020-2024). No other decade has the string of 100+ days as does 2020-2024. June 2021 heat dome had all-time PDX temp of 116.

The other end of the spectrum matters here. The years w/ the most 100+ days. '41, 77, 2021, 2022, 2023 Those years all saw five days of 100+ weather, most in a year in PDX. '81, 92, '94, '06 all had four while '71, 88, '94, '08, '09, 2016 & 2017 had 3. There's weather, and then there's climate.

Since the NOAA began tracking daily temps for PDX in 1938, we've seen, ya know, a trend. In Portland, 100 degrees has, in the past, been quite rare. From 1938-1976, 23 years didn't see a single 100 degree day while another six had just one 100+ day in a year.

We're now experiencing a heat dome in Portland, and this will be the longest-lasting in our city's history. Notables: Friday: Upper 90s Saturday: 101 Sunday: 101-105 Mon: 100 Tues: 100 This is significant for so many reasons, and not just bc many people here don't have AC.

1) The best way to keep them safe is to not have fireworks. 2) It is kinda hilarious that we are willing to do more to protect our furry family members from trauma than we are other saving other humans from guns or the police. I'm all in favor of protecting doggos. Now do humans, too.

Yes! The right to vote has no bounds outside of treason, and those who are incarcerated also feel the effects of voters, especially as the vast majority are not serving life sentences and will feel laws both when they are inmates and later when they are again "free".

i don't think a "nice guy" persona is a sign of someone secretly being a bad person. men with "i'm a huge piece of shit" personas have done this shit. so have men with "i'm just a regular guy" and "i'm a serious thinker" and "i'm a huge mess but fun." personality is not really what is at issue here.

"What to the slave is the 4th of July?" Many now know Douglass's July 5th quote, but very few know he said it in a speech not to Black Americans but as a barb aimed at the hypocrisy of white abolitionists in attendance who said much and did little. MLK would say much the same over a century later.

That's a good point. Same as they did with socialism, CRT & DEI and are currently doing with "woke". Tbf, liberals haven't exactly done ourselves any favors with that type of thing either. Not everybody on the right is a Nazi. Some certainly are, but McConnell isn't.

That did occur, btw. More than once. However, it was more fear mongering than anything, and it worked. The southern colonies (whoops called em states above) read it for what it was and put their support behind a cause which would not infringe upon their "rights" to own people.

"He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us" Thomas Jefferson picked up the support of the southern states w/ the very last grievance, which along w/ a reference to frontier "Savages", claims the British encouraged, sometimes successfully, for the enslaved to rise up against their oppressors.

Thank you, PDX, for being so awesome. Fireworks are dangerous (and expensive), and their sound harms both our pets and some of us. I cannot properly explain what I go through, but it isn't a good time. This: 💙 Besides, Francis Scott Key wouldn't have been able to see any "rockets red glare" anyway.

Yeah. Because MAGA wouldn't take the vaccine and refused to mask or social distance when Biden was POTUS. We see this reflected in per capita deaths across the country. MAGA counties and states far outpaced democracy-wanters by a fair margin.

Hell, 60% of the population of Texas lives in 11 counties, and there is a Republican supermajority in Austin which makes them feel as though they aren't represented. Should DFW, Austin, San Antonio, Houston & El Paso get to break away and make their own state? Just so dumb.

As an FYI, the most 100-degree days Portland has ever had in a year: four. That's happened a couple times each decade but has skyrocketed since 2020, w/ three years already matching the record. It was never this early. Not even when it was 116 in June 2021.

I’ve been in shock since Monday AM. The fact the Supreme Court didn’t simply affirm the lower court’s ruling & dismiss Trump’s absurd claims of absolute immunity was appalling, given trial delays — but this is calamitous for democracy writ large. Like Dred Scott, “Trump vs U.S.” will be infamous.
