I agree on the undercurrent of ableism, but disagree on the socioeconomic assessment of sport. Ice Hockey is a great example, it hasn't been a low income accessible sport in decades, and it has a huge following. Likewise with motorsports. Low income accessibility doesn't matter as much anymore.

Hockey can be played on the street using relatively cheap or improvised gear. Nascar was started by people who liked to tinker with standard cars. People take their street cars to the track all the time. Further, by the time they became expensive they were already cemented into the culture.
