"Counter-protesters provoked violence" strongly suggests that the *actual* protesters *enacted* the violence, which is simply false. Of course the violent right-wing thugs also weren't "counter-protesters," they were violent right-wing thugs there to assault the protesters, so the NYT can GFI.
But would we say they āprovokedā violence? They *enacted* the violence, didnāt they? Itās not like they jeered at the protesters and the protesters cracked. They were violent toward the protesters.
