I think a thing that's poorly understood about American history is that a lot of the progress made through the New Deal was driven by the political elite's fear of the Russian Revolution happening here and not by them having a sudden turn of heart after being visited by multiple ghosts or something.

If Bernie had dropped out sooner, Biden wouldn't have had to debate him one on one, so Biden wouldn't have had to be injected with the good debate drugs so early and wouldn't have built up so much tolerance to them by now.

And that's of course what makes them such an attractive option to the ultrawealthy

That article only mentions the South but nice try. If you look at breakdowns by age, you also see that black voters, like all other groups, did not vote as a monolith. Iirc Sanders beat Biden among voters under 30 of all racial categories in almost all states.

That was an oft-repeated talking point and certainly true in South Carolina but not true on the national level:

It's never really seemed to me like right wing "Christians" actually care about the Christianity part. It feels like religion merely provides a convenient cover for irrational beliefs as a protected category.

Will never stop being weird to me how reviled skateboards are in public spaces while we massively subsidize and enable oversized death machines like SUVs and vanity pickups.

Just found out from this article by Shin'ichi Hatakeyama that Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse comic strip was published in translation in a Kobe newspaper for several months in 1930, with Japanese dialog written left-to-right.

For some reason living off "unearned" money is always a problem only when it comes to the poor, for rich people it's totally fine to live off inheritances, capital gains, and the labor of others.
Why is no one ever concerned about the lack of dignity among the rich?

Whoever is responsible for making that happen and promoting it should be shunned. People will stop producing pernicious nonsense like this when no one in their field will take them seriously anymore.

Watched another game and the pitcher and batter pitched and batted so hard that the bat broke in two, like a real-life version of the Giacobinid Meteor Shower Swing from Jump's The Astros. Japanese baseball: redeemed.

Even if homeless ppl were housed in luxury units, that would be vastly superior to LA's previous approach: city council funneling millions to their hotel owner buddies. Also, people should react to this framing by demanding sth be done for them too instead of not doing anything for those worse off.

Went to the Tokiwa-so manga museum today and the nearby store is selling the FLIP booklet that has my presentation and face in it (mostly because it also contains an interview with Suzuki Shin'ichi, who is the subject of a current exhibition, but still pretty cool).

I got this theory that one reason why Japanese comics have been so successful is that unlike elsewhere manga creators never forgot that what made comics so popular to begin with was the synchronization of sound and motion.

Took me a while, but I finally finished @kaerusan55.bsky.social 's Fukidashi-ron and greatly enjoyed it, especially the discussion of representations of telepathy in comics.

An easy way to support your public library is to make use of it—even if only to visit. We keep (anonymized) statistics not only on circulation totals but on attendance & visits and even on patron-staff interactions. Big numbers please trustees and municipal/county administrators. 📚

Academia is so weird cos half the people in it are just the most generous, passionate individuals you could ever meet and half are just absolute charlatans with egos built of spun sugar.

When we talk about "taxing rich people" there's folks who think we're talking about Aunt Edna who has the second summer home. The astronomical levels of "rich" that now exist are almost unfathomable to people. It's the stuff of vast empirical dynasties. We're talking about taxing emperors.

My little shopping hack...
When I see something
I want at the store
I first put it into my bag
Then run past the register
This is how I always get great products cheaply
