I've been talking about this since became aware of it and left the public service 3 years ago. I'm also doing it under my own name, not posting in anonymously under a pseudonym. I've been subject to significant pressure from industry, government, academics and NGOs. I don't owe you anything.

It gets better though. Not only are offsets facilitating an increase in emissions, a majority of the offsets being bought by industries to meet their 'emissions reduction' requirements are not even real. So its MORE emissions on top of MORE emissions. www.abc.net.au/news/2024-03...

The 2022-23 reported emissions of facilities covered by the Safeguard Mechanism (ie. Australia's flagship 'climate' policy) is 138.7MT CO2e. This is higher than the 2021-22 reported emissions (137.5 MT CO2e). I'm sure it will be fine. cleanenergyregulator.gov.au/markets/repo...

Every wondered how the government is planning on reconciling Australia's massive gas expansion with its climate commitments? With millions and millions of pretend carbon offsets. Reputex projects that by 2033 we'll be generating 45 million offsets every year.

It's not always as brazen as this. Alan Finkel's 'Powering Up', while notionally promoting the clean energy transition, is actually 300 pages explaining how massive and hard and expensive it will be. It's a very effective way of maintaining the status quo.

"World needs ‘trillions’ for climate action, says COP28 president". An increasingly prevalent delay tactic is fossil fuel proponents/enablers enthusiastically endorsing the transition to clean energy while repeatedly emphasising the cost & scale.
