Judge orders Millburn NJ to start work on 75-unit affordable housing development. The town had promised to build it, but then reneged on the deal because of NIMBY sentiment. Judge says she will start issuing daily fines if the town doesn't get the shovels going soon. gothamist.com/news/judge-o...

With a bit of googling, I have come to the conclusion that the bot has erroneously pulled images of "Princeton-by-the-Sea", an unincorporated community in San Mateo County, CA. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princet...

The race to be the Democratic Party nominee for the US Presidential election in 2024. Are these trick questions?

It was a very weird privatization. The rail franchises were quite often subsidiaries of public rail companies from other European countries. And they often got as much public subsidy as the old British Rail did. And the tracks were already re-nationalized over 20 years ago.

I keep thinking about how there are probably thousands of Republicans who have real serious misgivings about having Donald Trump as their candidate but they just stfu instead of going on and on and on about why the runaway winner of their primary has to drop out.

The town already spends a lot of money hiring guys with bows and arrows and guns to shoot deer. I am fine with this. Shooting them with a rifle is probably the most effective and humane way to reduce deer numbers. And too many deer is definitely a problem.

Princeton has been prevented from implementing this plan because the state doesn't really allow it. Actually the state doesn't really know if it is allowed or not, and in that vacuum of understanding, the plan is not able to be implemented.

The town of Princeton continues to push to advance its plan for non-lethal deer control, aka "shooting female deer with tranquilizer darts, then kidnapping them off to a surgery center to be sterilized". www.tapinto.net/towns/prince...

If Trump gets reelected with a trifecta, I am quite sure that he will imprison politicians and activists who he doesn't like. I could even imagine certain NY Times columnists being investigated and possibly imprisoned.

Thinking about this some more, the survey question is probably bad. Asking somebody "is your school district segregated?" is probably like asking them "are you a terrible driver?" or "do you beat your wife?" People understand that a 'yes' answer is bad, so they say 'no', even if 'yes' is truthful!

Yes, I hear you. How do you define 'segregation'? For example, people probably think that Princeton NJ is your classic honky money-town. But the school district is majority-minority...

Right. I think that New Jersey's 600 hyperlocal school districts offer something that is quite attractive to a lot of people, i.e. the ability to exclude people who are less wealthy than them, which tends to disproportionately mean Black and Hispanic people.

NJT has done it on its other lines, the ones that aren't owned by Amtrak! And, incrdibly, they have fewer overhead wire issues on those lines!

For example, the neighborhood where I live in Princeton was founded as an integrated neighborhood, and residents here are very proud of that. But there is now only one Black family living here, and zero Hispanic families. But I don't think people consider there to be any segregation problem...

I just heard a story that the electrical utility was doing maintenance on lines in a small village and they had to run a generator to keep everyone's power on while they were doing it, but somebody objected to the noise of the generator, so now nobody has any electricity until 4.30 p.m.

If big corporations think that housing is a great investment with no downside, that is usually a sign that there is an artificial scarcity problem. We should build lots more housing so there is enough housing for everybody and rentier corporations can't make easy money by investing in it.

I'm a bit skeptical about this "get hedge funds out of housing and families into housing" idea. I mean, what do hedge funds and corporations do with all the housing that they own? Surely they...rent it to families? On further inspection, the Jersey City bill appears to just be anti-renter:

New York has a long history of refusing to borrow ideas about how cities work from other places and then acting like it invented an idea when it finally does, but “put trash in bins instead of piling bags on sidewalks” takes the cake.

I'm not convinced about the Zillow's statistics here though, because I follow local realtors quite closely, and they all reckon that the median home sale price in Princeton is now something like $1.5 million. Zillow reckons that our 'typical home value' is just $926K.

It's very noticeable that when I was driving back from Montreal along I-87 in New York last week, state troopers were out enforcing traffic every few miles and most drivers were driving normally. Once I got into NJ, there was no sign of any traffic enforcement, and drivers are just being reckless.
