They should stop making sequels that create a whole new game from scratch and just make game sized add ons for the first game. That way you can retroactively improve on the old game while adding a whole new story.

I miss Bethesda doing this. Like Todd can say they have a 10 year plan for Starfield support, but that doesn't mean much when it's taking a full year for the first DLC to even come out, and there being no official mod support.

Careful what you wish for, this is what Destiny half-tries to do

The recent Hitman trilogy kinda did this? Then when they did release a new game, you could get the old game's levels built right into that package.

You're almost describing DLC, if DLC were done the right way.

like what they're doing with Factorio! The upcoming Space Age expansion is, I am given to understand, a significant engine update plus a mod containing the actual new content

People have been wanting EA to do that with FIFA for ages but of course the greedy bastards would never.

That's what Tears of the Kingdom felt like and it was great.

You just described Tears of the Kingdom. It rules, everyone loved it and can’t stop complaining about it

I straight up miss full expansion packs. Brood War, even dragon age awakening, things like that. They only seem to exist with MMOs now

(Currently having a lovely time playing Fallout 4, a 9 year old video game, with the rather nice Sim Settlements mod.)

Oh hey, the Blood and Wine DLC! And somehow I feel this is what Shadow of the Erdtree will end up being.

Sort of what happened with Escape Velocity and how you could drop a file into the Plugins folder that turned it into a completely new game? And when the sequels came out, they were basically the same engine with new data files?

There's a vocal minority of people who'd get upset about this but I would love for that to be the norm. Heck, I feel like some AAA games used to be that way and it was fine back then. Half-Life 2 and the Episodes come to mind.
