Can NaNoWriMo apply its code of conduct to all interactions with them including respinses to private messages they send you? Probably yes.
Is it catastrophically stupid to try to do so on almost literally countless levels? Absolutely yes.
Oh boy. This is one of those common misapplications of CoC.
You still want the ability to have it apply, but you also want the discretion for where it doesn't.
The best part of this is them saying they are "enforcing code of conduct" but then also using that as a platform to defend their views on AI, making it the least professional rules enforcement I've ever seen.
